Access for Everyone! Becoming Good Digital Citizens!
My students need laptops in the classroom so that there is equity between students, and everyone can learn to be a good digital citizen in preparation for high school.
My students love when they can use technology, but teachers are limited because some students don't have computers at home and equipment is limited at school. Having a couple of computers in the classroom would allow us to try more innovative tech-related lessons.
My students live in rural southern Wisconsin.
They are varied in their interests and their economic backgrounds. But they are all fun, enthusiastic and amazing middle schoolers that want to get things done!
My students are 7th graders (12-13 years old), and they are just discovering the world of Facebook, Instagram, and all the other fascinating social tools out there. They are digital natives and love when I "speak their language." I have created a safe environment for social and educational interaction to help them learn social studies and learn how to behave in an appropriate way online. They love to check in with each other and ask for help with their classes through the social channel we've created.
My Project
Because of the differences in economic circumstances some students feel left out of social and academic situations. They can't work on a project at home with friends and often don't or can't problem solve how to get access to the tools they need.
With even a small number of laptop computers these students can stay caught up, study and feel more included. This would not only impact my class, but it would allow students to stay on top of assignments in other classes also. It could also help those quick learners to challenge themselves using Khan Academy or other online activities to stretch their brains a bit.
In middle school, we teach kids the basics so that they can be more independent learners in high school.
They need to learn how to use the Internet responsibly. They learn how to collaborate, be creative and share content in an electronic world.
