Mrs. Hartung from South Milwaukee WI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Access for All

My students need books that are high interest but have a low readability level. I work with sixth grade students who are struggling readers receiving reading intervention.

My Students

"Hi/lo material is vitally important for middle grade students, whose self-esteem as readers may be lacking as much as their reading proficiency. Books should not appear obviously "special" or have their reading levels marked in any apparent way. The best hi/lo books frequently have as much appeal for good readers as they do for struggling readers."

Our middle school is located on the south end of the 6-12 campus and has students enrolled in grades 6th-8th.

Currently, the middle school has approximately 733 students. Our middle school offers a comprehensive curriculum. In addition to the core academic areas, students have the opportunity to enroll in music, art, business, family and consumer education, foreign language, physical education, and technical education. I work with a group of students in a small intervention group setting and most of my students are reading 1-2 years below grade level. Many of my students struggle to find books that hey not only can read but that there interested in reading and don't look like low level books. I want my students to enjoy reading and I want to be able to provide them engaging and interesting books at their reading levels.

My Project

These books will support my students as they will provide my students a lower reading level but will keep them engaged by being high interest and books that my students don't feel are too much like low level books. Many of my students are still working on fluency and decoding multisyllable words so these books will provide them that additional practice and opportunity to work on these skills and strategies in books that are at the readability level.

As a reading interventionist, I am continually looking for ways to support my students in their reading journey.

My goal is to continue to expose my students to texts that are at their reading level but I also want to keep them engaged in reading so the texts I put in their hands needs to be something they are interested in reading. Reading is a life long habit that is harder for some students to acquire and it is my job as a reading interventionist to continually find new resources.
