Access for All; Disability Not Identity; Exploring Social Norms
My students need more book choices for literature circles. The books selected deal with social issues and main characters with disabilities. Students with below grade-level reading will benefit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students featured in this entry are my incoming 6th graders. I will be teaching three homerooms, totaling 80+ students from the ages of 11 to 12. The students are mostly Hispanic Americans. I will service 70+ regular education students with inclusion who are diverse learners. Also, transitioning bilingual students who receive ESL supports.
My students' reading abilities range from 2nd grade to 8th grade reading abilities.
I work in a large urban district whose diverse learners and bilingual students are under-performing. Students are showing more growth each year on district and state testing. All students who struggled showed growth using response to intervention methods.
There is a slightly unstable student enrollment, as well as no funding for tutoring or after-school programs. The majority of students receive free lunch and very few receive reduced or denied lunch status.
My Project
Middle school is already hard enough without you feeling like you are different. The students will learn about disabilities being a challenge, but not who diverse learners are. Students already have issues with peer pressure. I will be continuing into my second year with the literature circle groups helping them expand their perspectives on students with learning disabilities and fitting in.
However, I have students who do not read at grade level and would like to be in on our discussions, too.
In September, students will be given their expectations and group norms. Students will come prepared for their weekly Tuesday/Thursday meetings by reading these chapter books ahead of time, which increases their fluency and vocabulary. As a group, the students will select from a variety of activity choices for their weekly discussions. Students will learn and engage through student-led discussions about disabilities complicating how students deal with social issues and identity.
Students will be given the opportunity to explore individually through project-based learning assignments. Students will be able to select from a variety of choices. Students will turn in from a selection of assignments from their portfolios or interactive notebooks for grading.
