My students need multiple copies of relevant, realistic fiction texts that represent current social justice issues in our society to challenge and promote their critical thinking.
My sub-urban school serves 9-12th grade students who are steadily growing in population and diversity. However, a majority of my students are still limited in their experiences and not as prepared for the rigors of advanced high school courses, college and the workforce as I would like them to be. As a 9th grade Accelerated English teacher, my goal is to facilitate that necessary transition from middle school dependency to real-world preparedness and the books we read in class serve as our mentors on this path.
My district is a passionate advocate of Choice Reading, but the funds to keep socially relevant, sought-after books in my students' hands are limited, and as a young teacher, I can no longer afford to purchase the titles my students need and want to read on my own.
With the right books in their hands, my students will be able to explore new cultures, learn about social justice issues, and challenge their capacity for critical thinking. As their proudest coach and fan, I am so exciting to guide them along the way.
My Project
I am asking for multiple copies of five different books. My 9th grade accelerated English students will form book clubs with my other 9A sections, and together they will explore relevant, social justice texts such as Piecing Me Together, The 57 Bus, and Just Mercy throughout the semester.
By pairing students from my different sections, I hope to build 9th grade community during a critical social period of their high school career and encourage deeper levels of thinking through exposure to real-world issues in our society.
Through in-depth analysis of the text and insightful discussion, my hope is for my students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally as they expand their current perspectives of the world around them and prepare for the rigor and reality of college and the workforce.
