Help me give my students the opportunity to learn circuits, STEM, assembly, and many other 21st century skills that they do not have access to in their classrooms.
I am an enthusiastic elementary school teacher serving about sixty gifted and talented students. My wonderful students are in grades 1st-5th. Because my students are labeled Gifted, they often are not worried about as much since "their test scores are good." But I see that they need and deserve MORE. I am teaching them coding, circuits, Google apps, STEM, and the list of 21st-century skills goes on. They are able to do SO much, but the budget only goes so far especially for specialty programs. That is why I am creating this project.
Because of budget issues, I am split between two elementary schools.
Both of my schools are labeled Title I (highest poverty), which means we have a lot more challenges, the school budget being the main one. I serve about sixty amazingly diverse students with different backgrounds, languages, and cultures. My Gifted students are incredibly innovative, creative, and absolutely love challenges in learning. Because of this, I want to do everything in my power to help them achieve in more than just "standardized tests".
My Project
In my classroom, I pull small groups grades 1st-5th every day ensuring that the students labeled Gifted and Talented receive their state required learning accommodations. Most of these students already have the average or above average knowledge needed to succeed academically, so my focus is to take them further. I teach them circuits, coding, assembly, STEM, and many other 21st century skills. My incentive for each group is what I call "Interest Stations." I set up a choice board with several stations where the students can explore whatever interests they have: technology, STEM, assembly, creation, logic brain teasers, circuits, etc. It is there favorite time of the day. Currently, I have one of each item I chose in my cart that was handed down to me. Unfortunately, they are pretty dated, missing parts from previous teachers, and split between two campuses. Honestly, my students amaze me on a daily basis. I can only imagine what they could do if they had access to more.
