Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A girl with a big smile keeps asking me when the next volume of Paper Girls is coming out. Her best friend has raced through the entire series of Amulet and he's recommended it to two more friends. Another boy talks to me about last night's episode of The Flash while a freshman I don't teach has wandered in to look for a Batman comic. This is a typical day in my classroom library.

My students are avid readers but cannot afford books of their own.

Our school serves about six hundred students from a low income area, most of whom receive free or reduced lunch. They rely on our school for access to high quality materials. Without a school librarian or library budget to provide these, I have been purchasing books out of pocket.

Students from ninth through twelve grade come to borrow books. Graphic novels are the most popular; from general education to Advance Placement classes, everyone love to read them. Students see themselves reflected in these tales of heroes from varied backgrounds.

My Project

Modern comics are more inclusive than ever and address issues of social justice. These stories feature diverse heroes, written by authors just as different from one another. Included in this project, Ta Nehisi Coates writes Black Panther; G. Willow Wilson pens Ms. Marvel; and Congressmen John Lewis tells his own life story.

More than reading for pleasure, my students are also reading to build empathy.

They'll meet superheroes who are Muslim, Latina, African, LGBTQ, refugees, orphans, Norse gods, soldiers, and real Civil Rights icons. These characters all face adversity but they teach readers how to stand up for others and themselves.

If you could see the joy on my students' faces when I bring in a new book, you would know the impact just one has on their lives. These graphic novels will be passed around and enjoyed for years to come.
