Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students love to learn and explore the nonfiction world and love to debate about current event topics, except they have limited exposure to nonfiction text. I teach at a Title I school in a highest poverty area.

My students love to argue, but they argue using evidence about current events!

I am overjoyed that whenever a claim is made, my students instantly want to know where is the evidence for that claim. This is critical thinking skills at its best.

My Project

I will use the material from this project to aid my students in the process of becoming lifelong critical thinkers. These materials will be used for both individual as well as small group instruction. Using Scholastic Magazines can give them the exposure that they need.

This project will allow my students to begin to see themselves as true debaters by being able to use evidence from a nonfiction text and use evidence and reasoning to discuss a topic.

With the new state standards, students are expected to analyze nonfiction literature and engage in argument from evidence. The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in authentic nonfiction text.
