My students have all developed a great deal as readers since the start of second grade. Although this is exciting news, it means that our classroom library is now depleted on the higher reading levels that they have all now reached. My students need new books to fuel their passion for reading!
My second grade students come from a low-income neighborhood in New York, and the majority of them qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Accordingly, my students do not all have access to the learning materials at home needed to promote their academic development. Furthermore, as English language learners, many of them come from homes in which English is not the primary language spoken, therefore making it more difficult for my students to receive academic support at home. Regardless of the challenges they face, my students are highly motivated learners who work hard everyday in order to reach their second grade goals and beyond. I am continually inspired by my students' investment in their learning.
My Project
My students have worked hard all year to enter the world of chapter books and have finally succeeded! The only problem is, my classroom library is not equipped to handle my students who are now reading longer chapter books above grade level!
Acquiring these new leveled, chapter books will allow my students to explore new worlds through literature and become re-energized about reading and further invested in their own growth. Furthermore, these these additional books will allow for my students to engage in more independent reading, which is a crucial time for them to become stronger and more fluent readers.
I taught my students last year in first grade and have looped up with them this year in second grade.
I am absolutely astounded at the reading growth they have each made since I met them nearly two years ago. The little five and six year olds that first walked through my classroom doors are now mature readers who are comprehending chapter books! I love to watch my students get lost in their books everyday in class and would appreciate your help in providing them with higher level books!
