My students need low-height tables, wobble cushions, and fidget bands to increase motivation and maintain high engagement. I believe kids need to move and have a choice in what works best for them!
I teach at a Title I school in which most of my students are on free and reduced-priced lunch. My students are very diverse and have many different learning styles. My Jedi (my Star Wars reference for my students) love to learn as a whole class, as groups, or as partners. My students enjoy learning new concepts especially if the content is hands-on mathematics or the geography of a new country like Australia or Canada.
My students love learning but what they really love is the option to choose where to learn.
My students thrive when they are able to reach their goals or master content they previously struggled with. Our Star Wars classroom is arranged in groups, pairs, and individual working areas. We currently have a big table to use for small groups and some pillow cushions if students want to work on the floor; yet, my students want and need more options for their learning environment.
My Project
I want to be able to increase the amount of movement in my classroom. My students enjoy using our big table for small group work; however, I could use more choices for my students. My students enjoy sitting on the floor and working. If I am able to add low tables, students will be able to choose this work area as an option for learning.
Students, just like adults, want the option to chose a seat that suits them best.
Students will be able to choose the best seat for them that will help them focus. Students will have the option to stand, sit, or wobble while they learn. The wobble cushions can be added to any chair, or on the floor, so students can move and wiggle while they work. We are constantly working in groups or pairs so adding the cushions, the bands, and the tables will help my students work more collaboratively. Students want to learn but they must be in a safe and comfortable environment to succeed.
