Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you first began to recognize sounds, letters, and words? Kindergarten is the year when we begin to read books. Before we can begin to read we MUST master letter recognition and sounds. This is the foundation to all future learning!
My students are from economically disadvantaged households.
In many of their homes books and learning materials are not readily accessible. Many of my 22 students are ESL learners and come from various backgrounds and 90 percent of our school receives free and reduced priced lunch. In Texas, budget cuts have really hurt our school and supplies are limited. The money has decreased in what we can buy for our students, but the expectations are high. My students are eager to learn how to read and write. They come to school ready to learn and have parents who are willing to help them become successful learners.
My Project
Most of my students come into kindergarten knowing very little about letter recognition and sounds. It is my goal to have all my students master their letter identification by the end of the first few months of the school year. I am able to achieve this by using engaging, hands-on learning centers.
I have requested activities like Alphabet Bingo, a Beginning Sounds Phonics Train, an All About Letters Pocket Chart, and Alphabet Picture Puzzles. The activities requested will allow my students to practice skills daily. Activities such as these will capture the interest of students and help to ensure that they will master learning their letter names and sounds.
This project is extremely important because kindergarten provides the first real reading experience for school aged children.
I believe building a strong foundation during kindergarten will help students become lifelong learners. Your generous donation will help my students to learn their letter names and sounds. You will be helping my students to begin their journey of becoming readers! Thank you for your help!
