Teaching five-year-olds is the most rewarding experience! They are so full of curiosity, creativity and energy. Half of my students have had some preschool prior to TK (transitional kindergarten) and for the other half, this is their first time in a classroom setting. We are only 20 days into the school year and they have adjusted to a full day of routines, procedures and of course, learning! My goal is to build a classroom community that fosters a love of learning by providing a variety of hands on activities for all students.
Learning through play is essential for transitional kindergarten students and providing developmentally appropriate materials is a huge benefit for them. My students attend a full day program that requires many transitions throughout the day for language lab, P.E., library visits, lunch and recess. They spend a good portion of the day in a large group for circle time, morning meetings and completing workbooks. There is a block of time in our afternoon schedule that allows for free choice activities. In addition to the centers in my classroom, I want my students to be able to access a rotating variety of engaging educational activities.
