My students need two iPads to use as a learning center so they can be in control of their own learning, while the teacher is working with another small group.
Have you ever tried to herd cats? Sometimes teaching 32 six year olds can seem like that without the use of smaller groupings within the classroom.
My first grade classroom is a Title 1 school in a diverse area, ranked in the top 5 of API scores in the county.
Our class is a mix of English language learners, academically advanced, Title 1 students, and students with special needs. With 32 students, using small groups to differentiate instruction is essential.
My Project
With 32 diverse students, using small groups to differentiate instruction is essential. With the use of the iPads in the classroom, we will be able to utilize several different applications to create small learning centers for students to use while the teacher is working with other students. There are applications for who are acquiring English, need sensory help to form letters correctly, need additional challenges in math, and for those who are still learning to read. Students can use applications to help them with reading comprehension, fluency, and decoding. Using the iPads as a creative tool to make videos about knowledge learned in social studies and science will help the students with comprehension of difficult subject matter. The iPads will also help students practice basic math facts or compute challenging word problems. Additionally, the iPads will give first graders another piece of technology to master.
With our diverse population and large class size, we need small groups to differentiate.
The iPads are a perfect tool to use in a small group of independent learners . Because the iPads are of high interest to students, they will be easily managed as an independent learning center. Additionally, with the rise of technology, it is important that students are exposed to as much of it as possible at an early age.
