Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all special education students, and have active IEP’s. Most of my students are 3-5 years old and have a disability known as a Developmental Delay. Many also have Speech and Language Impairments. Other disabilities that can be enrolled in my program include, but are not limited to: Learning Disabilities, Autism, Visual Impairment, Orthopedically Impairment, and Emotional Disturbances. My students are mostly low-income, and many are English Language Learners. Every student who attends our school gets free breakfast and lunch. Many of them lack basic skills, and all are working a minimum of two grade levels below their actual grade level. Many of my students face challenges at home. School is someplace they enjoy coming, and especially in my classroom, where they feel safe and know that they can work at their level.
My Project
Many of my students are seeing their letters for the first time. This educational adventure is hard enough, but many of my students have reduced attention spans and lack the ability to focus on non-preferred activities. Adding the puppets to help teach the abc's will help my students learn in a fun and fulfilling way. Students will meet each letter with the puppet during circle time. Many students do not actively speak, or are selectively mute and puppets are a way to help them speak and repeat the names of the letters, letter sounds and words that begin with that letter.
