Making ABC Learning an Experience to Remember!!!!!
Do you remember what it was like to start your first day of school as a Kindergartner?
Eager to Learn and curious about what is to come. Perhaps nervous and a little afraid because this is your first experience with school.
In addition to these emotions, my Kindergarten class students also face many life obstacles and challenges that other children do not, because of the zip code in which they live.
If I had to describe my students, I would say unleashed potential waiting for someone to provide them with the opportunity for an exceptional educational experience.
I want to help my students have this opportunity by providing them with an engaging and fun environment for learning their ABCs, the foundation of the life skill of reading and writing.
ABCs are the building blocks of learning how to read and write. The most important teaching tip of all is to make ABC learning a fun experience, tapping into a child’s creative, critical and innovative thinking. I want my students to have a love of learning this literacy foundation and untap their creativeness, as they prepare to read and write.
My students come to class looking forward to the “Hungry Monster” that will eat the letters as they name them and sound them out, or our “What’s in the Brown Bag Game” where we figure out words by the sound of the first letter and funny clues about what the word is.
This has proven to me that making it fun for my scholars helps them enjoy learning their ABCs.
Having grown up in poverty on the one extreme and working in the corporate world for 30+ years, with my last position as one of the few African American Vice President of Operations, on the other extreme, I know firsthand what it’s like to be disadvantaged and privileged. I made a choice to use my privilege to make a difference in the life of those who are disadvantaged through teaching in Title I schools.
