My students need letter manipulatives in order to access learning. Most have not been exposed to letters before, and they need concrete examples and experiences in order to gain knowledge.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a high need area that is apart of a large African American community. My school serves all the Kindergarten students for the whole district. For many of my students, this may be their first time to come to school and they're struggling with the transition. I want to create a more play based learning environment in my classroom to help ease the transition. As a special education teacher, many of my students have communication needs that prevent them from verbalizing their wants and needs. It is my goal as a teacher to create a space where they feel loved and safe to play and grow.
My Project
My students begin kindergarten with little learning experience. It is my goal to create a play filled environment in order for students to build concrete learning experiences through exposure first before beginning direct instruction. Students need to use their hands to explore the shapes of letters and build background knowledge before they're ready to learn their letters which is what they'll do with the letter rockets and alphabet tubs.
My students need concrete learning materials and a structured classroom experience that will be enhanced by manipulatives and the use of a timer.
Students will use the timer in order to assist in their ability to transition smoothly from task to task. MagnaTiles will be utilized to extended their knowledge of building and provide additional concrete experiences to develop motor skills. This will assist my learners in building knowledge, but also in building their experience for how to be successful in school.
