An overwhelming and alarming amount of students from urban areas like New York City have asthma. The disease plagues school-aged children with little to no healthcare in under-resourced districts like mine. I teach in a severely under-resourced middle school in Brooklyn, New York. More than 80% of my students qualify for free lunch. A traditional New York City literacy classroom is centered around a "reading rug" and other reading areas. Students sit and lounge on the rug during independent reading time. My rug was donated and, despite overuse, is in good condition. However, even though we are required to have a rug in our classroom, no one is required to clean it—nor are we provided with the resources to do so. I am asking for your help in acquiring a vacuum for my reading rug in order to keep asthma triggers to a minimum in my classroom. Nearly half of my students have asthma and many are chronically ill. I would love to eliminate one obstacle to learning in my classroom with your help. Thank you in advance for your commitment to urban education, your desire to help New York City school children and your understanding of the urgency of this request.
