I work with a great group of students who happen to have severe mental and physical disabilities. The school I work for is a school that provides services for students who need accommodations that public schools have a difficult time providing. I like to highlight my students' abilities rather than focus on their disabilities.
I teach students with severe cognitive and physical impairments aged 5-21 years in a school that specializes in working with these students.
Our school is located in an impoverished urban area where most of the students participate in the free lunch program. Unfortunately, due to recent economic hardships financial cuts have been made to not only our school but our entire community which inhibits our ability to order necessary materials.
All of my students have multiple handicaps. My students' handicaps range from being nonverbal to relying on a wheelchair for mobility. Our entire school serves students with the most profound mental and physical disabilities. Our school is very important to our community.
My students need blow up sharks, fake shark fins, shark hand puppets, shark shower caps, a light up shark, shark bath tub toys, shark squirts, and a shark action figure. The materials that I am requesting for my students will help them explore "shark week" on many different levels from a ride on shark toy to shark fins they can wear and become a shark themselves, sharks they can swim around the pool or a shark game that they can play with their peers.
Students will be able to "swim with the sharks" by playing with the different shark pool toys or better yet become a shark themselves and swim around the pool!
By donating to our project, you will not only help improve student attention and focus but you will make swim time fun and enjoyable for them! My goal is to encourage movement in the water by providing an array of manipulatives to encourage independent movement in the water.
