Help me give my students an opportunity to increase student engagement and strategies My students are in need of 2 iPads used as an Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) Device when utilizing an AAC app.
My students are 3-5 year olds in an Early Childhood Special Education Program. For many students this is their first exposure to a school or receiving speech-language services. The students have been identified as having a communication delay. This may include students who have excellent receptive language skills. However, their articulation and expressive language skills are so delayed their speech is unintelligible. In many instances these students may have a diagnosis of autism. They may use learned words or phrases such as “scripting” but are unable to use expressive language functionally. These students are often visual learners with an amazing memory. The use of an AAC device with a voice output, which is available on an ipad with an AAC app, provides students with a robust vocabulary and visual cues for students. These devices serve as a model for spoken language and a “voice” that become their own. The voice output activation on the device provides immediate feedback not only for the student, but also the person they are communicating with.
My Project
My students have had minimal success using verbal productions to communicate. We have had great succe using iPads as an AAC device for over 5 years. Our students use the iPads with an AAC device during a trial period to see if it is the right tool to meet the needs of individual students. Currently some of our original iPads are no longer updating to the latest ios and app versions. These iPads are becoming unreliable and therefore ineffective in meeting the needs of the students in trials. I would like to continue the legacy of providing AAC device trials to these deserving students. Having newer iPads will ensure we are giving the students a chance to learn the power of communication in a consistent manner with appropriate technology in place.
