Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I, low Income (94.46 free/reduced-price lunch), International Spanish Academy and AVID School. The students at our school come from mostly international families that do not speak English. Some of the students are new to the United States and are learning how to assimilate to our way of life. These students are eager to learn however they struggle with a variety of mental health concerns and it is my goal to reach each student so that they can focus on their academics and do well.
My Project
We know that school can be stressful for all children; they are expected to learn specific standards, perform well during tests and there is little time for breaks and relaxation. The goal of this project is to provide a space where my students can spend a few minutes relaxing when things get to stressful for them and they need to recharge.
Students, particularly elementary school ones, often struggle with staying focused for long periods of time.
In a 2016 study, psychologist Karrie Godwin and a team of researchers measured how attentive elementary students were during class, and discovered that they spent over a quarter of the time distracted, unable to focus on the teacher or the current task. Shorter lessons, however, kept student attention high: Teachers found it more effective to give several 10-minute lessons instead of fewer 30-minute ones.
This space will allow kids to take much needed relaxing breaks!
