Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are critical thinkers who are always looking for a challenge. They love to learn in diverse ways, and they love to express what they know through different mediums. It is not unusual for a student to ask if they can create a video, a graphic novel, a performance, etc. to show me that they know the material. They are kind, caring, and collaborative individuals who inspire me every day to be a better teacher and to be the best person I can be.

My Project

In this project I have compiled all of the materials that we use in both AP biology and chemistry throughout the year. These are supplies that I buy every year and as you can see, they are not cheap.

Our science budget is quite small, but in order to do all of the labs and projects throughout the year, we need the following:

1. Food coloring - this is food coloring that we use in our diffusion/osmosis lab in AP biology.

2. Daily Chef Translucent Cups - We use these cups ALL THE TIME! We use them for our separation lab, we use them for our chemical reaction labs, we use them for our diffusion/osmosis lab. We don't have many small beakers so these cups take their place.

3. Foam Sheets - These foam sheets are used for an activity where the students create models of enzymes.

4. Poppy Seeds and Iron Filings - These are used for our Separation Lab in chemistry where the students have to engineer a way to separate 4 different compounds.

5. Gloves - We do not wear gloves often in our classes, but sometimes the students handle harsh chemicals

6. Packing tape, Duct tape, masking tape, hot glue sticks, bamboo sticks, straws, ziploc bags, baking soda, pompoms - In chemistry, we do two projects where the students build objects (race cars and airbags). For these projects, the students need building materials!

7. Hamster food, pet bedding, fish filters - We have class pets that we need to care for!

8. Beads and pipe cleaners - for modeling proteins

9. Dialysis tubing - Diffusion/osmosis lab!

10. Cotton balls - Cellular Respiration lab!

11. Yeast - Enzyme lab!

12. Alka seltzer, balloons, ivory soap - Gas law lab!

13. Magnesium - chemical reaction lab!
