This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school located near Fort Bragg, NC. My students come from a variety of backgrounds including military, high poverty, and single-parent households. My students enjoy coming to school as an escape from other aspects in their lives. When Friday rolls around, they beg to come back on Saturday which makes me happy that they love school but sad that they would rather be at school than with their families.
I feel very blessed to go to a job that I love every day.
The days fly by because I genuinely love what I do. My role is to guide and support my students through their first grade educational journey but along the way they are guiding me to be a better person and educator.
My Project
My principal has built in enrichment time into my weekly schedule which means I am able to tailor my time towards things that excite my students. I started Project-Based learning last school year and the children were over the moon excited. I have taken a professional development course on project-based learning so I am ready to really put it in place in my classroom on a regular basis.
When children are excited, there are fewer behavior issues and a greater amount of learning as well as students teaching each other.
I have chosen materials that will get us through the school year ranging from a pumpkin based project, animal projects, and a dinosaur project. I am being realistic with the projects and the time that we have.
The pumpkin and squash books will be used to start a learning experience during that fall where we student types of squash and their decomposition. The trays will be utilized for sorting, carrying the squash, watching the decomposition, etc. The animal texts will be used for a bulk of the project-based learning that we do as six and seven year olds are obsessed with animals. They will use the giant Post-It notes to share what they have learned. Finally, the dinosaur eggs will be part of an end of the year project where we hatch them, work on fossils, and set up a museum.
