Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a fifth-year teacher, I am thrilled to be working at a remarkable charter school in the South Bronx. At my school, every classroom is co-taught. This increases teachers’ ability to work with students in small groups, to give targeted instruction, and to get to better meet students’ needs. My co-teacher and I work with twenty-six bright and beautiful first-graders. Together we question, wonder, explore, and learn!
My school works in collaboration with The New York Foundling (one of New York’s oldest and largest child welfare agencies) to support the social-emotional and academic growth of children in the welfare and foster care systems.
One third of the students attending my school are involved with a foster care prevention program, one third are in foster care, and one third reside in one of our country’s most impoverished congressional districts. As stated in our mission, this unique charter school empowers children by creating a learning environment that addresses and reduces the barriers to academic success by partnering family support services with a rigorous academic program.
My Project
A new year, a new grade! For the 2018-2019 school year I will be a first grade teacher. This is something I've always wanted to experience, and I'm so excited that the time has come. First grade is full of firsts! Reading for the first time, gaining independence for the first time, and building deeper friendships for the first time.
For my first graders, I want to build a library that is as tempting to jump into as a candy shop!
These Lakeshore bins will allow my students to browse titles in a bright and sunny environment. The assortment of colors will enhance our learning space and the easy-to-grasp bins are perfect for first graders. In addition, Lakeshore produces seriously durable classroom materials, so I know these bins will withstand years of love.
The paper trays will serve as the students' individual mailboxes, which will help them stay organized. Lastly, the classroom supply caddies will allow each group of children to have an assortment of supplies available without having to step away from the project or task at hand. Help bring our first grade classroom to life by allowing this dream learning space to become a reality!
