My students need 33 well-written, thoughtful, and engaging read-alouds. They absolutely love The Little Red Hen, Strega Nona, and Ordinary Mary, and would love to own them!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book." - J.K. Rowling
As I crack open the pages of a book and look out at the bright eyes of my students, I realize that this quote could not be more true. My students, who never sit still for a moment, are entranced.
My 24 students see our Title I school as a place of refuge.
A dependable and consistent base in their ever-changing, very transient little lives. Over 70% of students in our school come from low-income homes. A majority of my students come from broken homes, with separated parents/guardians taking turns for drop-off and pick-up.
My school is dedicated to giving these students hope for their future, instilling in them the habits of perseverance, inquiry, responsibility, craftsmanship, and respect. We want to engage students in purposeful learning that supports creative and critical thinking - heavily involving the incorporation of the outdoors in this goal.
Our motto is "We are crew, not passengers." No one gets a sideline seat in our mission to learn. Only through working together are we able to achieve.
My Project
My students need new read aloud books. Our read-aloud time together is when my students take to heart the lessons that I have been instilling in them.
When I tell them "We are crew, not passengers," they remember that The Little Red Hen earned a cake by working hard, and that her friends, who did nothing, earned nothing.
When I ask them "Who will be a role model?" they think of Ordinary Mary, and how her one act of kindness changed the world.
Books give my students a context to connect the impact that their learning could have on their lives, and the lives of their crew. It gives them a context for the "why" of what we're doing at school. I believe that Roald Dahl's quote from Matilda rings true for my students - "All the reading she had done had given her a view of life they had never seen."
My students own few, if any, books.
School is the only place where they are able to experience the magic of reading and enjoy the feeling of getting lost in a good book. They deserve the luxury of reading a good book and experiencing a world outside of their own.
Sometimes it is hard for 5- and 6-year-olds to comprehend the complex ideas of responsibility, respect, kindness, and collaboration. But seeing that look of, "I got it!" in their eyes as I read is irreplaceable.
