A Wrinkle in SPED: Comparing/Contrasting Literature with Film
My students need high interest novels at an appropriate reading level for their ability. The novel "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle is perfect as the new movie just came out, creating buzz and interest.
As a teacher of special education students in high school, it is my duty to modify the projects and work that they do to meet their needs at their levels. I fight many battles each day to ensure the success of each and every one of my students. Many of them have not experienced a whole lot of success in their education to this point. The best chance I have to help my students grow into life-long learners is providing meaningful and motivating learning experiences where they see the value and connection to the world around them.
Special Education students need the building blocks for the fundamental skills that special projects provide.
The materials provided to the other English classrooms are not appropriate for my students and hinder their ability to access their education fully. Through DonorsChoose.org, I hope to bring the right materials and funding to my students who need it more than ever in a technologically advanced and fast-paced world that expects them to be ready for graduation in just a short time.
My Project
My students will be able to read and comprehend this novel with minimal support, guaranteeing that they feel the success and sense of accomplishment that so many take for granted. The high interest content combined with the time topic and new movie will generate an internal motivation to engage actively in the classroom activities in my students.
The more familiar structure of a fantasy/Sci-Fi novel will be much less confusing and intimidating than the typical high school fare.
Thus creating a focus on comprehension skills and strategies rather than basic word calling and plot structure.
We will read the novel "A Wrinkle in Time", then watch the movie to bring their understanding to a whole new level. Students cant help but compare the differences in a movie with the novel. So many opportunities for discussion and activities will organically arise from such an analytical exercise.
