I am an art teacher in a south side Chicago public school. I would like my students to experience a weaving project to wrap up a fashion illustration lesson. This project will have the students learn about some of the cultures most known for the weaving process such as: Native Americans and some cultures found within the continent of Africa. We will examine the traditional patterns that are found within these cultures weavings and their meanings. My students will then create a weaving that is of their own unique design. We will then complete the project by doing a short compare/contrast essay and a classroom critique of the work. The supplies needed for this project are masking tape, cardboard looms, large darning or yarn needles, strong "base string" (heavy duty crochet string that is thick works well), a variety of colored and textured yarns, and "packing tools" (old-fashiond combs or picks work well). I would like my students to have this experience so they can learn about a variety of cultures, understand that all cloth is made by the weaving process - be it machine or handmade - and teach them a connection to a real world skill - and some focus on tradition as well. This is a project my students have shown interest in, but which I cannot undertake for the simple fact of a lack of funding. I estimate that this project will reach about 45 students.
