Help me give my students high interest and culturally relevant books, items that can make class more fun such as the answer buzzers, and games like the LEGACY card game that teach invaluable American history.
My students are English as a Second Language (ESL/ENL) students from all over the Pittsburgh area. Over 15 languages are represented in my classroom, and some of my students are learning to be literate for the first time, in English. Many of my students have interrupted formal educational experiences (SIFE or SLIFE), but they are without a doubt the most driven and hardworking students in the school. Many of my students are separated from their nuclear families or are living in foster homes. Some have children of their own, and are even holding down a full time job while attending school full time.
My students, who have traveled thousands of miles for a better life, deserve the best educational experience we can offer them.
They come to the United States with so little, but with so much life experience; they are so incredibly loving, funny, community-driven, and willing to help each other out. I have the world represented in my classroom by way of almost every continent, and they deserve the absolute best.
My Project
Students will be able to use books and games during class time's specially designed Daily 5 program in which students practice reading to self, reading to others, listening, writing, and word work.
Many of my students beg me for extra reading materials to practice English!
For this reason, students will also be able to take their choice of book home to read outside of school hours. This will be an invaluable way for them to practice English with high interest, lower level texts. Some higher level texts are mixed in because the levels of my students vary greatly.
