My students need to visually see the real world. Using color printers for our books makes them come alive and real. We can make connections to the real world.
I have an amazing group of kindergarteners. They are an advanced class because they come to school knowing phonics so that we can proceed at a faster and enriched pace. They are extremely curious about their world and many times have more questions than I can answer. They want to know the whys. They want to know what makes things work.
They are interested in the world around them and other places.
In most cases, they come from working class families in our neighborhood and do not have a great opportunity to be exposed to other places and people.
My Project
We teach our kindergarteners to read. We explain the importance of connecting text to pictures and both to the real world. We use mini books that we print from online sources to make those connections.
We want to engage our students and draw them into our studies by displaying the color and the real beauty of our world.
Black and white booklets do not show the beauty and variety of the real world, nor do they always show subjects realistically. You can see the green of the plains or forests, the blues of the oceans or the multi colors of the coral under the sea. You can see the differences in the people of the world or where they come from.
We want to expose our students at this young age to experiences that they do not always get where they live and go to school. It would be a great way to broaden our world.
