Hooray! This project is fully funded
I teach in Chappell School, Chicago. Chappell is a school where more than 83% of the students are in the reduced lunch program. I teach Spanish as a world language to 164 students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Students come to Spanish class 40 min every day. I try to apply differentiation to my students according to their level/knowledge of Spanish, their different interests and abilities. Thus, they can take much more advantage of their learning experience.
People might wonder why learning a second or foreign language is important. Well, it is. Learning a foreign language helps you have a better understanding of the world; be aware and have a better acceptance of ethnic groups, cultural and linguistic diversity such as language awareness, social diversity and so forth. It makes you broaden your career possibilities. It also allows you to communicate much better abroad and even within your own community and other communities for a variety of purposes: help, research, work, study, solidarity etc.
For those who come from Hispanic backgrounds and use Spanish at home, learning their heritage language and mastering it helps them succeed and improve their first/second language arts skills (e.g. English) and it also has a dramatic impact in their global academic output.
However, in order to be able to achieve the above mentioned it is important to have the adequate materials in the Spanish Classroom and in its library such as: leveled reading books, tapes, CDs, DVDs and videos in Spanish (educational and other real world samples), materials from different Hispanic cultures and countries, color pictures and flashcards, Spanish magazines and a tape recorder and listening center to use as a language lab. I believe that if students have the appropriate resources at their reach they can obviously attain all learning objectives and succeed in their schooling and understanding of the world.
