My students are 5th graders in a middle school setting to relieve overcrowding at the local elementary school. Our resources are limited due to funding. Therefore, my class library is an essential resource for my students.
Many of my students do not have access to books at home.
We are a small community with many low-income families. I have a diverse group of learners including English Language Learners and EC. My students are very enthusiastic about reading new books. I have found that my low readers want to try to read books that my grade-level students read.
As an ELA teacher, reading is very important to me. I plan to use the book, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, to engage students while covering many of the Common Core reading standards. I will be using the book for read-aloud sessions and independent reading. There will be group discussions along with journal writing.
The book, Wonder, is a great resource to educate students on courage, kindness, friendship, and character.
My goal is for my students to not only learn these four traits through this story, but to also learn about characters' point of view, theme, and key details in a text.
