Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the remedial reading teacher at a small, rural Title I school where 100% of our students participate in the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program. At a recent staff meeting, our math coach presented the math curriculum update and tasked the school with three goals: improve our math benchmark and MAP scores, increase our math instructional strategies, and make math cross curricular.
Before the curriculum meeting, I did not know there were financial literacy standards for grades K-12.
My Project
As the reading interventionist, I thought about how I can help prepare my students to understand the financial marketplace and make informed decisions about their money.
According to Dr. Gerald Lauber of the National Urban Alliance, “Real life learning, as demonstrated by our current economic crisis, reinforces our belief that the teaching of financial literacy should no longer be an option for the children in our nation’s schools. Our job is to help teachers integrate financial literacy into existing curriculum and to make learning relevant to the needs of today’s students.”
Using games, novels, and picture books in my small and guided reading groups, I will assist students in understanding money, financial literacy vocabulary terms, taxes, needs and wants, budgeting, income, expenses, methods of payment, savings accounts, credit cards and other important topics that will help make them "financially literate."
