Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my second graders are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Each year it is my goal to create a classroom community where all students can access the curriculum, express themselves, and take ownership of their learning.
The students in my class live in an urban, low-income city, comprised largely of immigrant families. The majority of my students speak a language other than English at home. Despite the many challenges that they may face, these children come to school each and every day ready to persevere and embrace all opportunities to learn something new.
My Project
Each year in our district second graders complete a unit titled: Biographies: Justice, Courage, and Fairness as part of our informational writing curriculum. This was one of my favorite units last year (my first in the district). I'm hoping these books will enhance the small collection of biographies I have purchased.
Please help me help my students understand the power of words and images to transform lives and provide insight into the experiences of other people, cultures, and historical periods.
Biographies are usually written about people we admire or from whom we want to learn and authors make choices about what to include in a biography. The books I am requesting will introduce the children to important leaders in art, science, civil rights, and politics. The biographies include women, men, and people of different backgrounds and ethnicities. It is important that students learn about women and men who made a positive change.
