My students need exposure to the life skills of time and money through educational games, along with leveled non-fiction texts, as they continue to learn English.
"To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world."
While some of my students are immigrants, most of my students are refugees.
They are in a whole new world here in the United States and they often find that big responsibilities surround them. I begin to teach them English and they go on to be able to help their families navigate this new life.
My Project
The materials purchased encourage the use of life skills and align with the Common Core standards of education. One center will teach them how to order food at a restaurant and pay for it, too. Math story problems challenge the students to manipulate time and read an analog clock. Comprehension is taught through non-fiction texts at their reading level, which is often years behind their peers. Finally, some tricky aspects of English will be covered, such as homophones and idioms.
The funding of these educational elements will ensure that my unique EL students can be exposed to real world skills and the Common Core at their current English proficiency levels.
As their fluency in English increases, their self-esteem rises, and their future brightens in this whole new world.
