My students need these grade level books to take them beyond the walls of our classroom, to help foster a love of reading in hopes of improving their reading capabilities.
As a teacher in an inner-city district, I see that my students face many obstacles both inside and outside of the classroom. My third grade classroom is a very special place of challenge and discovery. Students spend the year focusing on reading all in preparation for the AIR test they must pass to move onto fourth grade.
The students are full of wonder and excitement.
They are excited and eager to explore the world of reading and all that it has to offer. They wish to expand their critical thinking skills and take great pride in their learning. They are willing to challenge themselves everyday to become better readers and learners.
My Project
Being able to read is the most important skill to have, especially in third grade. Books need to be interesting and challenging to help students become better readers. By allowing my students to choose their own books from my classroom library, I am fostering their wants and needs while improving their capabilities.
Reading is the key to opening new doors, not only for learning, but also for taking my students to new heights in their imaginations and in the classroom.
It is said that if a student is not reading at grade level by the end of third grade, most will never be able to catch up, therefore, having a greater chance of dropping out of high school. By giving my students the choice of books that interest them, it is my hope that their love of reading will continue to grow resulting in lifelong readers.
