My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious, and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that a portion of our students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism but none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated and excelling in the classroom is the norm!
Our class of students are a unique, clever, determined, and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs - making each and every lesson new and exciting!
My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
My Project
My students LOVE books and often ask for recommendations, to do a read aloud or simply if they can bring a book home to read before bed. We have a library full of books but I often realized that there are a couple of topics or a specific set of books that we do not have--so let's give them what they deserve and more!
Each book comes with an endless number of lessons--from real life lessons to decoding and phonics lessons-- I would love to provide my students with the opportunity to read books with characters that are both similar and different than they are!
The Elephant and Piggie Book Set are some of my students' (and my) favorite. The two characters, Elephant and Piggie, are intricate and the best of friends. These books are excellent for shared reading and my absolute favorite way to get my students engaged in reading. We have a couple of the books from the set that we have read many times and I would love to get the whole set for us to engage with! The other books include the last book of a series that we have, books on diverse characters that my students can relate to and books about emotions and self-worth. All of these books will make a huge impact in our classroom community and library and I can't wait to watch my students jump right in!
