I have the opportunity of working with six students with various special needs, such as physical impairments (whole-body or one extremity), visual impairments, cognitive impairment, autism, etc. In my classroom, we focus on a wide-range of skills, including social skills, life skills, daily living skills and functional academics.
My students work hard each day to overcome the hurdles of their disability with a positive attitude, the desire to succeed and the goal to be as independent as possible.
These students strive to improve their independence and gain the necessary skills to be successful in their daily lives. It is a joy to work with them.
My Project
The materials for this project will be used to create a classroom environment that helps students feel more comfortable. One area will allow the students to have a quiet lounge area to relax in, practice communication and social skills and provide flexible seating.
Alternative seating, classroom decor and alternative lights allow the classroom to feel more welcoming and provides the students with a safe place to learn.
The lighting and decor gives the students a environment with personality and helps eliminate the need for the overhead lights that often bother students. Helping fulfill the students basic needs will allow them to be better prepared to learn.
