My students are very eclectic, artistic, and sociable. Students are taught about multiple intelligence and how to look for and tap into the great learner in themselves! Our school serves students from 6th to 12th grade. 6th grade has over 300 students.
Many of my students are learning English and have individual academic and social emotional needs that deserve attention.
School attendance is high.
Our school is located right outside of Tampa, Florida. We are surrounded by water and can experience hurricane forces during the hurricane season, as we did with Hurricane Irma. I teach Earth and space sciences to 150 6th graders. Our classroom is inclusive and I encourage creative expressions all with a keen eye on real science.
My Project
I am requesting an Apple watch and charger to learn from.
The watch is extremely very useful in the classroom.
I've learned from others who have one that there are multiple ways to use the timer systems, and many educational apps to use when presenting learning topics to students.
I plan on learning to use the app "Dark Sky", this is a weather app that I will work into science lessons. I am also researching apps that I can use and share with students when I am teaching about the Universe.
In my advanced classes, I use a constructivist type lessons that do not rely on retrieval of just facts. I ask students thought-provoking questions and have them collaborate on projects instead. One example of this could be using the app to monitor heart rate during an experiment on the lowering the rate of blood pressure. Students would take turns wearing the watch to incorporate real world data that is personalized. Questions posed could be; does music effect one's heart rate/blood pressure? What about looking at photos of cute animals? There are many possibilities to incorporate the technology.
I also hope to take professional development classes at the Apple store near me to learn more ways to incorporate the use of the Apple watch into my classroom. The classes are free, but I need a watch to participate.
I'd love an opportunity to learn how to do more with this piece of technology with students!
