This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school (SBECA) serves 326 students in grades six through eight. They are a brilliant and highly capable group, despite the many challenges that they face. SBECA is located in the poorest urban Congressional District in the country and more than 90% of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. The educational outcomes in our community lag behind the City and State averages, and most students enter middle school multiple grade levels behind. But our talented faculty and SBECA’s holistic approach to meeting students’ needs, both inside and outside the classroom, aim to change our students’ trajectories and ensure that they have the opportunities and support they need to succeed in middle school and prepare for success in high school, college and beyond.

My Project

SBECA hopes to purchase a washing machine and a dryer to provide an additional layer of support for our students and their families. Connecting families to this free service will help reduce student absences caused by unclean clothes and help families eliminate a burdensome cost from their household budget. This service will also create streamlined opportunities for families to connect with our Family Engagement Coordinator and other school staff on-site, as part of their regular routine. Creating more opportunities for families to be in the school building will foster a greater sense of community, which will have a positive impact on the students’ lives at the school.
