This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a public high school neighboring a large city. Most students in the school qualify for free and reduced meals. My students receive special education support in their general education classes for a variety of disabilities such as ADHD, specific learning disabilities, emotional, hearing, and/or vision impairments. All of my students are on a diploma track which may or may not include vocational training in addition to exposure to a college-prep curriculum. Students with disabilities make up 14% of our total student population. They need all of the support they can get.
My Project
High school students appreciate being treated as the young adults they are. Turning our resource room into a welcoming environment offering coffee and a granola bar on the way to 1st hour creates a warm learning and supportive environment to start their day. It is a small gesture to remind them that we are happy they are in school. They feel valued and appreciated. They feel respected as an inspiring soon to be participating members of adult society. To share a cup of coffee with our students in the morning helps create a more professional working relationship between student and teacher while fostering a mentoring relationship, as well.
