A Voice For My Students: Helping Non-Verbal Children Express Themselves
My students need individual tablets to help them communicate their needs. My students are non-verbal and often experience extreme duress when trying to communicate.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 3 and 4 years of age and have a diagnosis of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). They are absolutely precious and have learned so much this year, but I believe they could do so much more if they had access to individualized technology.
My students are non-verbal and are unable to effectively communicate their needs.
The inability to communicate often leads to tantrums and tears both at home and at school.
My class is located in a Title I School and the majority of my students (80%) are from low income households. Currently, my students do not have access to tablets with speech generating apps at home or at school.
My Project
Even with daily intervention, my students with ASD continue to struggle with communication. However, research has shown that children with ASD who use tablets with a speech generating app often acquire language faster when used in conjunction with a language rich classroom environment.
I want my students to be able to communicate their needs, likes, and dislikes with everyone around them.
The individual tablets will help my students develop spoken language which is often the most pressing concern for parents.
Individual tablets will give my non-verbal students a much needed voice in this world. The tablets will allow my students to touch symbols, listen to word repetitions and utter words.
