I teach a self-contained, life skills based, special education class of middle school students. We have eight students of varying abilities. Students from outlying county schools are sent to our school in order to receive special education services tailored to their specific needs.
Many of my students are learning to speak (using a communication device) for the first time.
Communication is key to being able to request basic wants and needs as well as demonstrate knowledge in academic areas in school.
My Project
Our school gave us a classroom set of iPads that have communication software on them. This allows all students to have access to a communication device. Additionally, it allows staff to model communication using a device. However, there are some specialized pieces of equipment (cases, mounts, etc.) that will allow better access to communication for every students.
The right to speak and be heard is vital to all individuals.
These items will allow our students to have access to communication at all points throughout the day. Thank you for being a part of providing a voice for all the students in our classroom.
There are two different types (and some variations in color) of cases we are requesting. One type of case includes a speaker that will amplify sound. This is especially important for students who have mobility issues and may not be able to take their iPad to a communication partner. The second case includes a hand strap, stand, and shoulder strap. This will allow students to have their form of communication on them at all times. As you can guess, organizing and charging 10 iPads can be a challenge. The sorter will help students and staff store iPads in a neat fashion. We also have a student who is in a wheelchair and requires different seating arrangements. The clamp mount stand will allow her to have access to her voice no matter her position (wheelchair, desk, guided walker, etc.). All of these items will support my students to have a voice throughout the school day.
