My school is home to students who are curious, energetic and are always ready for a challenge. Their families are supportive and encourage them to work hard. Throughout our 6 1/2 hour day and for the next 180 days, we will be moving, building, creating, thinking, dreaming, engineering and growing.
The imagination my students possess is often built from the novels they read independently.
Their imagination can be seen in their academic confidence, willingness to try new things and perseverance to start over when need be. I love that they trust me when I suggest a title for them based on their interests and current reading ability.
Finding creative ways to connect willing readers to novels is my joy.
My Project
I begin each school year with a "Book Tasting". Students return from recess to a bounty of books on their desks. Picture blue and white checkerboard table cloths, 4 novels stacked on a placemat with a menu balancing on top. Once students have time to dig into these novels (perusing the cover, summary and flipping through the pages), they answer several questions found in the "menu". If they choose, they may check out all 4 novels or only just one. Students return the books they don't want carefully to a buffet of novels where other students may go to replenish their own stack.
Engaging my students' love for reading is the first step toward comprehension growth.
They won't necessarily grow as independent readers by reading difficult textbooks, in fact, their growth will come while reading books they choose to read. My challenge is keeping a steady stream of colorful and meaningful novel choices at their reach. Having brand new, current, and classic novels available, chosen with their interests in mind, would be an indescribable gift to not only my students but to me!
