Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am starting my new year with a new set of bilingual learners. I would like to start off the year with my own set of leveled readers because these learners need access to interesting books. I cannot make a difference in my students ability levels if I don't have access to a variety of books.
In a bilingual classroom, we have many types of learners: intelligent, witty, tech-savvy, thinkers, and struggling learners.
However, these students love working in small groups like a family. I also have very supportive parents even though many times they cannot help us with material support. We are a Title 1 School with 65% of students who eat free and reduced lunch. With that, there is very limited funding. Every day, I want to make learning relevant, interesting, and fun.
My Project
These learners are coming in the fourth grade with many reading ability levels--from kindergarten level to fourth grade. While some of them are fluent in Spanish, many of them are just transitioning into learning English. So, this is can be a challenging task for the teacher. However, with leveled books available, students can read with me in small guided reading groups. As a result, they can be better readers.
Students are also able to take these books home to read with their parents and other family members. This will allow parents to be involved in their children's education. Without interesting and leveled books, students may continue to read books that are above and beyond their levels. They will continue to struggle with reading and that will affect other subjects. It is imperative that we need to reach our struggling readers now.
These leveled books and an organized mobile cart will improve my classroom tremendously.
My students and I will have access to interesting and "just right" books. I can also involve parents and families in being active in their children's lives. If I can instill the love of reading now, then these learners will be excited about learning. It makes it easier for me and other staff members to work with learners who are willing and cooperative. It allows us to move forward in education positively.
