I teach second and third graders. The children attend Commodore Stockton Child Development Center, a program that serves low income families. A useful desktop computer is an important tool for children to have in the classroom.
During the year, we use the Kidzlit curriculum, which uses books to build children's language skills; we have oral discussions that help expand the children's ideas and thoughts about a book. We discuss and share ideas. A lot of children ask me if they can type instead of write because they have started to use the computer in their elementary school. They are excited about practicing computer skills. I also think that a computer gives them a chance to search useful information they cannot find in books. When we discuss, we could share what we have found using the computer, and that is exciting for all of us who want to learn and to know more about the topics we discuss.
Children can also design and edit their pictures by using computers. If children have more interest working on their art work and extension activities, that will benefit them to develop their creativities, problem solving and comprehension skills. We can also use computer to plan our trip to a place that can expand children's ideas about the book we have just discussed or the project that we have just started. I have seen that children also want to share the information that they have found through reading books. They can also print out their writings as a book and share it with their parents and friends. In addition, on Fridays, all children and staff like to do some movement activities and games. Music helps us to relax. A computer can also play music and could help children relax and play vocabulary games in a nice warm environment. Children learn directions, emotions, speed and etc?of their body with the movement coming along with the music from the computer. It is very important for children move their body with music because they can feel their body shapes and space. They will also learn how to calm themselves down if they know their emotions. So please, we are requesting a computer. Thank you for considering my proposal.
