Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are shrewd, savvy, brave, resilient and wise beyond their years. They attend a Title I school and live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. This is also the lowest academically performing school district in New York. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades six to twelve to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.
When my students enter the classroom and see an experiment set up, they are excited and curious and want to start exploring right away.
Most of my students come from homes where academic enrichment opportunities outside of school are limited. My students truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom. My goal is to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.
My Project
Lemonade Day is a fun, experiential program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their very own business - a lemonade stand. Each year, in participating cities, youth have the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship by setting up their business during their city's community-wide Lemonade Day. Instead of selling lemonade, our students will sell ice cream and cotton candy. Students love cool treats on hot afternoons. This Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker, cooler, and Candery Cotton Candy Machine will be used to raise money for school clubs. Students will be in charge of setting up a budget to buy supplies and market their product. They will be responsible for staffing decisions, line management, juggling wait times and customer satisfaction.
Running this ice cream and cotton candy stand will help my students learn and exercise selling skills, marketing skills, social skills, and psychological skills.
The entire operation will teach my students about financial literacy and the value of a dollar and offers skills they need to become successful in all areas of their lives.
