Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, determined, and amazing children. They love to move and to play. They enjoy school because they love learning in so many different ways. They are amazing because they show up to school with a smile on their faces no matter what their circumstances are at home! For many of my students, school is their safe haven.
I teach in a low-income urban area.
My students face many challenges in and out of school. Many of my students also speak another language at home but we use their bilingual capabilities to enhance their learning. They are determined to learn as much as they can so they can apply their education outside of school!
My Project
In third grade we have been learning about the westward expansion, Oklahoma history and statehood, primary and secondary sources, American Indian history, migration, the Dust Bowl, and so much more.
While many of these are great topics to learn about in the classroom, nothing is better than seeing and experiencing things first hand!
We have received funding for admission to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, which is amazing! Unfortunately, we do not have funding upfront for transportation. Admission and lunches have been taken care of. However, that does not mean much if we cannot get there. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum includes a unique opportunity for my students that allows them to see the things they have been learning about in class, in real life. In addition to the topics listed above, we will be learning about Hispanic and Asian American perspectives during this time period which are not normally presented in history. This will be a unique experience that will be very relatable and enjoyable for my students!
