Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 9th-grade reading/writing workshop to students in an inner-city alternative school. And I can tell you that most teenagers DO want to read, as long as we make the right books available!

Many of my students read below grade level and my class is designed to reach students who might not embrace reading without a nurturing and engaging setting; in this situation, the right books are KEY!

My goal is to help them love reading and to create life-long readers, writers, and learners.

My Project

Most of the books available through the department of education are classic school texts that students associate with their struggles with reading and not with pleasure. Given these choices, many of my students can't get excited about selecting books to read independently.

However, when presented with choices that truly interest them, I'm finding that my students will really embrace reading.

I'd like to take each of my 9th-grade students on a trip to the bookstore and allow them to browse the full range of options, select and buy a book. Browsing a bookstore will be a new experience for many of them. In an age of screen time, it seems vital more now than ever to show them the pleasure of owning, holding, and reading a book.
