My Students
My students have been asking about dissecting animals since the first day of school. They beamed with excitement when I told them it was a possibility. I can't wait to see their expressions when they hear they will dissect frogs for sure.
My students are enthusiastic 7th graders attending a charter school in Georgia.
Most come from immigrant families with 95% qualifying for free or reduced school lunch. They all overcome incredible odds to attend school and most maintain perfect attendance throughout the school year. My students are driven, curious and extremely talented. Since 5th grade they have passed and in many instances exceeded on state standardized tests. They continue to inspire me to be a great teacher.
My Project
My students will receive supplies and equipment to help them look inside the body of a frog. The lab safety goggles, gloves and aprons will help protect their eyes, skin and clothing during the experiment. The preserved frog specimens contain dyes to help students identify the circulatory and excretory systems. This will help students understand how the heart and other vital organs work to keep us alive. The dissection toolkits contain scalpels for cutting open skin, pins for holding animals open, scissors and tweezers for maneuvering once inside the body. My students will be like junior surgeons.
My students have so much untapped academic potential.
By receiving these science supplies they will truly understand how science works and how exciting it can be. When I asked my students who wanted to be a doctor, I was stunned when only 2 of 95 students raised their hand. I truly believe that this year in life science will inspire my students to pursue careers in science and medicine and make a tremendous impact in the world.
