My students need assistance to fund the required charter buses for our day trip to both Historic Jamestown, as well as the original Jamestown Settlement.
I am an energetic science and history teacher, who is always trying to enhance my student's learning experience while at school! I teach an average of seventy students each school year. We are located in a primarily low-income, rural area of our state, with around 85% of our students riding a bus to school on the long back country roads. We also have a high percentage of students on our free or reduced price lunch program.
Have you ever had so much energy bundled up that you need to move?
Well, many of my students love to move while they sit. I have three wonderful groups of students each and every day, all with different needs. I use many visuals, activities, and games to help keep students actively engaged in my classroom.
My Project
I teach Virginia History to my fourth-grade students. We study colonial Jamestown for two months of the year. There is no better way to relate the material than by taking our students back in time to the colonial Jamestown era. We take students on a full day of adventure by starting out at the original site of Jamestown, followed by an interactive, hands-on experience at Jamestown Settlement.
For most students, this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Due to the distance of our school from the destination, we are required to take charter buses. Unfortunately, this drives the price of the trip up to almost $90 for a student and parent to attend. Without assistance to pay for the buses, this is an astronomical price to ask a family to pay.
