A Tree Grows In Manhattan (But How High?)

My students need 10 clinometers and a laser level to be able to measure objects indirectly, using trigonometry and proportional reasoning.

My Students

Science and math class often seems to use poor classroom-only tools designed to replicate what we already know, instead of creating new knowledge. But if we had real tools, like the ones used by professionals (foresters, surveyors, architects, etc), we could explore the world in new ways.

Our students are curious and energetic.

At our school we strive to make learning authentic. While our students come from a myriad of backgrounds and boroughs, together we create a united community of problem solvers and thinkers. Because of budget cuts our public school has limited resources.

My Project

With the clinometer we will be able to venture outside of the school and find the measurements of tall objects normally considered difficult to measure. We can use line of sight to find viewing angles, and use trigonometry and proportions then discover the heights of trees in the park, nearby buildings, and other tall structures.

Let's make math exciting!

Math is all around us, not just inside of a classroom. Understanding and appreciating this is crucial in helping young adults become the thinkers of tomorrow and discover how math is useful in their own lives.
