My students are energetic boys and girls who share my love of books. We gather together on the reading rug and read everyday after lunch. I teach both first and second grade students, ages six to eight. I am familiar with the learning needs of my students because I taught most of them when they were with me for first grade.
Many of my students live in low-income households where English is not the primary language.
All students in my school receive breakfast and lunch at no cost to their families.
Kevin Henkes is an author and illustrator of award winning picture books that are of high interest for beginning readers. His characters are mice with funny names like Wemberly, Shelia Rae and Chrysanthemum. The mice act like real children who go to school, play with toys and play trick on their friends.
The library starter books will be a much needed addition to my classroom library.
The stories will be read to my students during daily read aloud. Most of my students are with me for a second year and will be happy to have newer and a greater selection of books to choose from. Not only will they be read for enjoyment, but they can be used as mentor texts for writing and language arts activities.
Not only will these books be read by my current students, they will be treasured by others for many years to come.
